In
late 1948 Daimler was contracted to design and
build prototypes of a new scout
car under the designation FV701. After trials
it was accepted for Army service and named the
Ferret. The first production Ferret, MK2, was
completed in mid 1952 and the Mk1 later the
same year. The last Ferret was produced in 1971,
totalling 4409 Ferrets built.
The Ferret entered Australia in 1953 and was
finally retired in 1970 (although there are
still some Ferrets on the active list for
ceremonial duties. Only the MK1 and MK2 Ferrets
were used by the Australian Army. |
